Energy payments can be slashed if you buy curtains or close the ones you have. Research carried out by the Energy Saving Trust has shown that households can make big savings by making simple changes.

One of the simplest suggestions they made was to close curtains after dusk or to buy curtains for windows. Closing curtains will prevent heat from escaping through the window.

The Trust also recommended identifying whether there are draughts around windows and doors. It’s possible to purchase draught excluder packs which fill the gaps around windows and doors, stopping heat from escaping.

But the easiest way to stop a draught through a window is simply to close the curtains! The Trust pointed out that by making very small changes it could be possible for a household to save up to £250 on energy bills each year. So why not buy curtains today and take advantage of our 25% sale?

<![CDATA[How About a Post-Christmas Revamp?]]>

Your Christmas decorations should all have been down now for a couple of weeks – how does your home look? A bit bare and empty? In need of sprucing up? At this time of year our bank accounts have pretty much been drained with Christmas shopping but why not take advantage of the sales to redefine your home in a cost effective way.

If you buy curtains they can transform your home at a relatively low cost. The advice of Interior designers is that curtains are one of the most important additions to your home – an accessory which seems like a small addition but can make a massive impact.

Buy curtains to compliment and add to the style of your home and the mood you want to create. For example, consider the length of the curtains you choose. A full length curtain which sweeps the floor can create a formal and dressy look.

Conversely, a short curtain will look more informal and a very long curtain where the fabric lies in luxurious folds on the floor can add romance to a room. Fabric too will alter style and mood as well as adding functionality.

Heavy luxurious fabrics like velvet add warm and look formal. Silk, muslins and other light weight fabrics will add romance. Heavy curtains which are lined with blackout material work well in bedrooms. Why not have a look at the range of curtains available at homeinteriors4u.com and take advantage of the 25% sale on all items and buy curtains now to revitalise your home.

Here are a few tips to help you along the way:
 • Look at the largest and most dominant piece of furniture in your room and choose your colour to co-ordinate with or match this. In doing this your room will look planned and have a consistent theme.
 • If you decide on a plain rather than patterned fabric, consider adding interest with tie backs or trim.
 • Think carefully about the practical function of your curtains. For example, generally speaking a heavy lined curtain will cost far more than a voile. But if you need to block out light or keep in warmth you’ll need to go for a more substantial fabric. However, if you simply want to dress a window and make a feature of it, you may not need to buy curtains with weight.
 • Consider what other fabrics you have in your room. Are there already lots of patterns or is it relatively plain. The other soft furnishings in your room will dictate to some extent what direction you go in with the pattern of the curtains you choose. Our fabric samples could help you match or contrast patterns and fabrics.

Armed with these tips – take a look around the website and enjoy the experience of choosing to buy curtains for your home.]]>

When you buy curtains in lightweight fabric there is no need for lining, but if you do choose to buy fabric for lining, you should make it a design feature of lightweight fabric. Curtains with lining hang better and look better from the outside. An interlining can be used to make think curtains appear fuller and richer. Interlining is thick, fluffy lining that thickens your curtains and will insulate your room.

Modern curtains tend to be simple, or plain. Typically buy curtains that are plain or with a geometric print and hang them from a single curtain pole. More traditional curtains can be more elaborate, such as fringed curtains, drapes, tie backs and pelmets with matching valances, throws and soft furnishing.

<![CDATA[Buy Curtains to Celebrate Your Windows]]>This is the final of three instalments on the Home Interiors 4U blog, giving guidance for the right curtains for your windows. Windows come in all shapes and sizes; please see the previous two blogs for tips on the right curtains for dormer windows, tall and narrow windows, how to make your room appear wider and how to make your room appear taller with curtains.

Celebrate Your Arched Windows

Arched windows are elegant and full of character, so you want to buy curtains that celebrate their natural presence.

By placing the pole well above the window and drawing the curtains fully back against the wall, you can create a feature of your arched windows; let your windows do the talking. Any house with feature windows, whether arched, stained glass or sash windows, can have subtle curtains that make more of the window. Buy curtains with a subtle colour or pattern to allow your windows to make the statement.

Buy Curtains for Bay Windows

There are a number of design and fitting problems associated with bay windows, which you may have found out already. A pole can be fitted across the window for curtains, but that will reduce the space in the room. Instead, use flexible tracks.

You also need to decide how many curtains you would like in your windows. One advantage of multiple curtains (one curtain per window) is that you will have more privacy. Also the curtains could fit inside the bay which leaves the flat wall free. Finally, multiple curtains fitted well above the window will accentuate the height of the room.

Alternatively, a pair of curtains will need to draw back against the flat wall. One advantage of this is it creates a sense of width, which can be beneficial in narrower rooms.

Home Interiors 4U would like to wish all our customers and blog readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

<![CDATA[Buy Curtains That Make the Most of Your Windows]]>Following on from the last Home Interiors 4U blog, we want to help you to understand how your choice of curtains can affect the overall impression of a room, making it appear smaller or larger, adds warmth or accentuates your windows.

Make the most of tall, narrow windows

Ceiling to floor windows that are long enough to cover the entire window will accentuate the elegance of long, tall windows. Buy curtains that are full against the walls when open. This creates a dramatic effect and can make your tall window a feature of the room.

If your wall width allows, you can create a broader effect by allowing the curtains to pull back over a wider area of the wall. A pelmet at the top of the curtains in the same fabric as the curtains will also add depth and grandeur. It is important to take into account the size of your room. If you have large windows in a smaller room, bight curtain colours of big and bold patterns in smaller and medium sized rooms will have the effect of making the room space appear smaller.

Clever Tricks for Dormer Windows

You may find you have a shortage of space either side of dormer windows. Conventional curtains will cover most of the window glass to reduce the light, yet this may create a claustrophobic effect. To limit this you could hang the curtains on a curved track allowing them to lie against the side walls when your curtains are open. This will maximise the look of your dormer windows. Buy curtains and tie backs in the same fabric. Tie backs allow your curtains to be neatly held in place when they are not being used and creates an overall tidier effect.

Read the next Home Interiors 4U blog for more tips and advice to buy curtains that suit your windows.

<![CDATA[Buy Curtains to Add Height or Width]]>Recently we addressed the issue of how to hang curtains for different types of window. Read the latest Home Interiors 4U blogs to understand how your choice of curtains can affect the overall impression of a room, making it appear larger or smaller, adding warmth or accentuate the best features of your windows.

Make narrow walls appear wider

The width of your window will largely determine the type of curtains you need. On a narrow wall in a room, it is beneficial to accentuate the width of the window to make the room appear wider. This can be achieved with shorter curtains (by limiting the height of the curtain to the window ledge.) A full width pole that allows drawn back curtains to lie fully against the wall will make the window appear wider. Buy curtains with horizontal stripes or a horizontal pattern to further accentuate the width of the room.

Make low ceiling rooms appear taller

Buy curtains to create the impression of height. This can be created simply when you hang the curtain pole or rail well above the window and allow the curtains to reach the floor. Much longer curtains will be needed and the length will create the impression of height in a room. A deep pelmet in the same material as the curtains will add to the effect of grandeur.

The Home Interiors 4U blog will feature further tips and advice for when you buy curtains for your room.

<![CDATA[Buy Curtains to Suit your Window]]>Windows come in all shapes and sizes and thankfully, so do curtains. It is now possible to buy curtains to fit any kind of window, whatever your personal taste. We’d like to give you some tips for the three main window dilemmas; small windows, bay windows and French doors. Which curtains should you buy?

• Small Windows – Believe it or not, one curtain is all you need for a small window. Two curtains are traditional for windows, but two curtains for a small window can overpower the space and make the window appear cramped. When you hang your one curtain, hang it to the side nearest to the corner of the room; that will appear neater.

• Bay Windows – The main choice here is between sill length curtains or floor length. Perhaps for practical reasons you need sill length, however in a bay window these may appear stubby or cut off. Bay windows tend to dominate a room, so if you buy curtains that are floor length, remember to choose fabric that is not overbearing. Choose fabric that adds interest but does not make the wrong statement.

• French Doors – Large curtains on a big window can overpower a room. Larger rooms can take a big statement, floor length curtains, however smaller kitchens or living rooms may appear more cramped with busy or too heavy curtains. For smaller rooms, roman blinds are a suitable alternative, however a lighter curtain fabric could also do the trick.

Buy curtains that suit your taste and the design of your room, however remember to take into account the space you have to work with. Three common window dilemmas solved!

<![CDATA[Period Curtains in Any Home]]>Interior design is often influenced by trends from the past. In particular period curtains are enjoying something of a renaissance, as people look to recreate the ambiance and feel of a period property. Naturally any interior design should reflect the style and function of a particular room and it is important to remember when you buy curtains that the window design should pull a themed room together.

A combination of period and modern design can be effective in creating a beautiful home. Design inspiration ideas are everywhere. When you buy curtains for a room you could use them to accent a particular colour or style. A living room with plain walls and natural design features can greatly benefit from intricately designed or period influenced curtains to add character and personality.

Buy curtains that will balance your room; for instance heavily patterned wall paper may look too much with similarly patterned curtains. Also some patterns can clash; heavy bold stripes are too overbearing to delicate floral designs. However period inspired rooms, such as Victorian, can look pretty with lace designs and fancy curtains combined with a patterned wall that is inspired by original photos or design from the era.

<![CDATA[Curtains that are the Perfect Fit ]]>Curtains are a great way to add some interior design to your home and keep your house warm in winter. If you want to get your curtains in time for Christmas there are a few steps you should take.

Firstly, are you going to buy curtains for your living room, your bedrooms, home office, conservatory or nursery? The function of the room will influence your choice of style, colour and fabric.

A bold colour or pattern will make a statement, intricate designs such as flowers, print or graphic art can take a room from traditional to modern and something more neutral can let your furniture, ornaments and wallpaper do the talking.

Traditionally, curtains tie in with the interior design of the entire room. For example, you could buy curtains in the same fabric as your furniture upholstery, bed spread or wallpaper. Your choice of colour needs to complement the carpet or rug shades as well as the colour of furniture, fittings and walls. Try to obtain samples of curtain fabric and take it to your home. With sample it is easier to get a feel for what fits best in the environment.

Ensure patterns do not clash. Different patterns for curtains and wallpaper can work well together, however in small rooms, can appear too “busy.”

Not everyone can afford an interior designer, so trust your own judgement and buy curtains for your rooms that feel right to you.

<![CDATA[Ideas for When You Buy Curtains]]>Most rooms benefit from an element of interior design, from choice of furniture to colour schemes. Just as important is your windows which can usually benefit from design too. Buy curtains to provide softness or decoration, there are many styles and colours out there. For a more modern style you could choose not to buy curtains, however that may leave the room looking bare and curtains are also excellent for heat insulation. If you can’t decide which curtains to buy, blinds or voiles are an alternative.

The main choice besides colour when you buy curtains is whether you would like an elaborate or simple style. More elaborate styles tend to be associated with traditional curtains however there are many elaborate and modern designs available today, as well as modern curtains with a simple finish. Elaborate curtains also tend to be more expensive however it really depends on the quality of the finish and the quality of the fabric.

If you live in a period property you may choose to decorate your room with a period theme. You can buy curtains that are very similar to original styles from any period. A small amount of research online should reveal the kind of thing you are looking for.

For the minimalist look, a plain track or a metal pole would suit as a curtain rail. Buy curtains that are either plain or in a light and simple fabric. Curtains with tabards are also a more modern style choice.

<![CDATA[Planning a Living Room]]>

There are three main considerations as you plan your new living room; the space that you have, the styles you like and your choice of furniture. Naturally budget needs to be taken into account also and may affect your choices, however you can design a tasteful living room on a shoe string budget by shopping around or even using reclaimed furniture and furnishings.

You need to be aware of the space you are working with as that will inform the style of your living room and your choice of furniture. A small room should not contain too much or bulky furniture as the room will appear cramped and cluttered. Similarly don’t buy curtains that are overbearing or too heavy in a small room or for a small window as it will dwarf the window and dominate the room.

Style considerations to take into account are colour, size and theme. If you want to create a modern environment, choose modern furniture, buy curtains that are not traditional and create a colour scheme that reflects your personality. A feature wall is considered very modern, which you could decorate with wallpaper or feature wallpaper. Buy curtains that match your feature wall in colour or design to make a statement.

When arranging the furniture in your room it is a good idea to draw a floor plan to help you visualise the room and ensure everything fits. If you want to create a sociable space, make the focal point the centre of the room with chairs grouped together to allow guests to talk to each other. A more formal environment should feature symmetry. For example, you could place two armchairs side by side or paintings next to each other in a row. The floor plan will help you to arrange your furniture in a way that creates the right space for you.

Curtains can be the crowning glory in any living room, provided they are chosen carefully. Don’t buy curtains in a hurry, take the time to sample the fabric, measure up your windows and choose a beautiful lining. Buy curtains that will fit harmoniously into your living space. Purple curtains appear opulent and rich and are a current trend with interior designers. Above all, buy curtains to complement your home.

<![CDATA[Top 10 Tips to Hang Pencil Pleat Curtains]]>Before you buy curtains have you thought about how you will hang them? Hanging curtains can be quite daunting for the first time, especially if you don’t know DIY. For the curtain hanging novice here is the HomeInteriors4u step by step guide to hanging pencil pleat curtains.

1. When you unpack your made to measure curtains they may be creased so it is a good idea to iron them. Otherwise you can hang them and let the creases drop out over time.

2. If you do iron your curtains remember to check that the fabric doesn’t have a special finish that can’t be ironed, such as metallic material.

3. You will find curtain tape at the top of your curtains with three rows of string threaded through. To achieve the gathered look you will need to pull the string.

4. Pull the three strings evenly and remember to check that the string is attached at the other end. If not, you will need to tie a knot in the string at the other end so you don’t pull it through altogether.

5. You want to pull the string enough so that each curtain is the width of approximately half of your track with a little left over, as your curtains will meet in the middle of your track.

6. Hold the curtains up to the rail to check that they fit and tie a loose knot at the end, a knot that can be easily undone for when you want to wash your curtains.

7. When you put in the curtain hooks, there are three rows of pockets to choose from. If you place your hooks nearer to the top of your curtains, your curtains will hang lower down. Adjust where you place the curtain hooks to adjust the height of the curtains.

8. Place a hook every 1 – 4 pockets. You can space them even more if you have fewer hooks, however the more hooks, the more secure your curtains will be, so consider purchasing more.

9. Try to support the weight of the curtains until they are fully hung, a friend or relative can help.

10. Once your curtains are hung, shape the pleats in the curtains and evenly distribute the hooks and pleats.
You can attach the pleats at the back with clips to help the curtains “remember” their shape.

When you buy curtains you are choosing something to create atmosphere and colour in your room. Why not buy curtains made to measure to fit your windows perfectly. Windows come in all shapes and sizes. You can buy curtains that fit any specific measurements from HomeInteriors4u in a range of fabrics and a choice of 5 linings.

<![CDATA[Made to Measure Curtains for French Doors]]>

French doors are larger than standard windows. Buy curtains measured to cover the doors entirely for privacy and heat insulation. Hanging curtains is fairly simple with household tools and a made to measure curtain rod. With a measuring tape, drill, curtain rods, made to measure curtains and a bit of skill, you can fit your French door curtains within an hour.

When you buy curtains you can choose from a range of fabric and colours to suit your personal taste and requirements. Linen fabric naturally creases for example, however it is lightweight and creases are not viewed as a flaw.

Once you have selected your fabric, you may also like to choose lining. Some curtain makers will offer a selection of linings.

French door curtains that are attached at the top and bottom of the window are known as “shirred” curtains. The advantage is the view is obscured for most of the time. Another option is to hang your curtains from above the window and have them free flowing at the bottom. That way you can have them open in the day and closed at night.

Take the following steps to fit your made to measure curtains to a French door:

• Measure the width of the door. If hanging the curtains from the wall, add a few inches to each side. If you are fitting shirred curtains, remember to add an inch to each side of the span of the glass.

Buy curtains and curtain rods that fit. The rods must fit in the top and bottom of the casings for shirred curtains. For free flowing curtains you only need one curtain rod, in a style of your choice. Remember the rod must fit the curtain casings.

• Measure where the rod needs to be mounted from the ceiling. Make sure that the rod hangs straight and screw in the rod casings. Shirred curtains need to be taut so make sure your measurements are accurate.

• Thread the curtains with the the rod through the top casing. As most curtain rods come apart, put the curtain through the middle of the rod, not from end.

• Hang the curtain and rod on the curtain rod holders.

When you buy curtains for French doors, it is important to have accurate measurements, especially for shirred curtains. One practical solution is to buy curtains that are made to measure.

<![CDATA[Made to Measure Curtains]]>If you are thinking about decorating your home have you considered made to measure curtains? The advantage over readymade curtains is that you can choose your fabric and lining and you can have them made to measure any window perfectly.

Today, it is possible to get a wide variety of made to measure curtains and you should be able to customise your lining with fabric of your choice. Buy curtains that reflect your personality and taste and buy curtains that are of a superior quality if you intend to keep them for a long time.

Curtains are essential to the interior design of any room. Curtains along with features such as rugs, ornaments and furniture can form the theme of a room with an accent colour or pattern. You may choose an accent colour for your curtains and rug, such as magenta or navy blue, keeping wallpaper neutral. Patterned curtains add depth to a room, although complicated patterns in a very small room may be too overbearing. When you buy curtains it is important to consider what you have in your room already and how much of a statement you would like to make with your curtains.

<![CDATA[Curtain Fabric]]>

When choosing a curtain fabric for a particular room it is important to consider the overall effect you wish to achieve and your budget.

Curtains are often the focal point of a room so the colour of the fabric is intrinsic to the look and feel of the room. Either choose a colour that contrast or compliments the colour scheme of the room. The type of fabric you select depends on the conditions in the room. A bright and airy room could benefit from a fabric with a soft texture. A dark north facing room would perhaps require a thin fabric to allow in as much natural light as possible.

Cold rooms may need a thick and heavy fabric to keep the cold out and a warm room a light fabric to cool the room down. Once you have selected the appropriate material you must decide whether to buy curtains or to attempt to make your own.

<![CDATA[Eco-Friendly Interior Design]]>

When you are looking to redesign your home, in today's society it is important to source renewable products that are eco-friendly and don't harm the environment.

Nowadays emphasis is on the threat of global warming and recycling so we need to research products thoroughly if we want to create a stylish home without harming the environment. Paint, for example, can contain harmful toxins. There are many eco-friendly alternatives available on the market. When using wood in your home it is advised to use wood from trees that will be replaced with new saplings.

Glass and metal are recyclable materials so if possible use products that have been recycled. The energy required to recycle is less than it is for making new products. When you buy curtains or fabric if possible choose ones that have been dyed with natural products, so they are free from harmful chemicals. Organic cotton and hemp are great alternatives.

Blue is a calming and spiritual colour whereas yellow is a bright and cheerful shade. Green gives the feeling of well being and pink is a relaxing and romantic colour. Cream is soothing to the eye and white is perceived as pure and clean. Accessories play an important role in the mood of the room. The most popular form of window dressing is curtains or drapes. Not only do they serve to keep the heat in and the cold out but they provide privacy. The texture and design of the curtain can completely change the look and feel of a room so it’s important to carefully consider the options available.

Whether you are opting for made to measure curtains, readymade or you are proficient at making your own, choosing the right curtain fabric can be daunting. You need to firstly consider whether your room is north or south facing. A cold north facing room often needs a light material to allow in more light and a bright room may need a heavier material to block out bright sunlight.

A light soft material, such as silk or acrylic can provide a light and airy feel to a room. In comparison a heavy linen or velvet fabric can create a warm and cosy feeling. Other popular curtain fabrics include calico, cotton, damask and muslin. One good tip is to use the same material for the curtains, scatter cushions and a throw so the whole look and feel can be brought together creating the original desired effect.

<![CDATA[Create More Living Space With A Conservatory]]>With today’s economic climate many of us are finding it makes more sense financially to improve rather than to move. Conservatories are being seen as a way of adding more much needed living space to your house whilst also adding value.

Gone are the days of leaky, draughty conservatories of the past. Nowadays, modern and contemporary designs can be tailor made to suit your requirements and needs of your family. Some people chose to use it as a dining room, a playroom or TV room for the kids or just as quiet room to enjoy the garden outlook.

When choosing your window dressings for your conservatory whether it’s made to measure curtains or blinds, it is beneficial to choose a light coloured fabric so as not to block out any light and a fabric that will not fade too much in strong sunlight. The glass in the windows tends to be double or even triple glazed allowing for greater insulation and fuel efficiency making conservatories a room to be used through of the whole year. This not only adds to your existing living space but adds real value to the price of your house.]]>

<![CDATA[Improve or Move?]]>With the recent recession many of us are finding that with house prices remaining static it leaves us unable to move up the property ladder. Improving and revamping what you have seems to be the best option at the moment thereby adding value to your home when the market eventually picks up.

Home improvements need to be considered carefully in order to maximise the true potential of your home. Some houses only need redecorating or refurbishing. A splash of colour, a change of carpet, made to measure curtains or restyled fixtures or fittings maybe all you need to bring a new lease of life into your home.

If you plan to extend your property, developers agree that going up adds the most value. A loft conversion transformed into a superb master bedroom with an en-suite adds the most value with up to 12.5% of the selling price. Extensions add up to 11% and a new kitchen could add 4.5% to the value.

But you have to remember your house is your home. You have to make changes that are right for you and your family. So while it is important to plan for the future in the hope the property market will pick up, in the meantime it has to work for you.]]>

<![CDATA[Window Coverings]]>When you enter a room your eyes are immediately drawn to the window. How you dress your window can reflect the mood and style of a room. So when it comes to home decor window dressings are an important element not to be overlooked.

How much natural sunlight a room has can play an important part when it comes to decorating a room. A south facing room, for example, can appear light and airy so you are spoilt for choice what type of fabrics and colours you chose. In comparison a north facing room, which is often in shady darkness, needs to be dressed in light and soft colours and materials in order to create the illusion of a light and bright room, heavy and dark fabrics would appear quite oppressive.

The shape of the window can sometimes appear challenging but with the extensive range of readymade and made to measure curtains that are available, there is sure to be one that will fit. Whatever style you chose to decorate your room in whether is contemporary, traditional or cosy cottage you need to bear in mind a balance of colour. Neutral shades with a splash of colour using curtains, throws and cushions in the same fabric can sometimes be the simple but most effective way of bringing the whole design together.]]>

<![CDATA[Decorating in a Small Space]]>When the room you are designing is spatially challenged it is important to make the right design choices in order to create an illusion of space.

Furniture can play a key role in maximising space. Innovative space saving storage systems are a good choice as they allows all clutter to be out of sight. Less is more, so keep furniture to a minimum and incorporate pieces such as fold up beds, extending tables and streamlined chairs.

When decorating a small space, select a colour which will reflect as much light as possible. Mirrors also play a key role in achieving this. Whether you choose readymade or made to measure curtains it are important to balance the textures of the furnishings. So pick colours of the same tone as opposed to having contrasting colours and patterns.

Small spaces, when given the correct treatment, can become a useable and comfortable area without feeling claustrophobic. Even the smallest room can be supersized.]]>

<![CDATA[Interior Design on a Budget]]>We all aspire to have a large house with luxurious furnishings, but in reality we have to live within our means. Your house is your home, it reflects your personality. Living well and being comfortable doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune; luxury is affordable on a budget.

How you pull the furnishings and decorations together in a room is far more important than how much you paid for them. Your lifestyle should dictate your choices. Buying within your budget doesn't mean you have to buy cheap quality, just plan and spend wisely.

A family with children, for example, should obviously pick appropriate furnishing to stand the rigours of family life. Emphasising comfort and practicality does not have to mean unattractive and functional can still also be stylish. Accept that with family life scratches and breakages come hand in hand so you need to decorate accordingly. There is no reason why little indulgent touches can't be added here and there.

Budget interior designing doesn't mean you have to be ordinary. Whether you are choosing furniture or made to measure curtains, wallpaper or soft furnishings, whatever budget you are restricted by, enhance your home with a sense of individuality, with added attitude, and the house of your dreams is an affordable reality.]]>

<![CDATA[The Smallest Room in the House]]>It might be the smallest room in the house but many regard the cloakroom as reflection of their personalities. It is somewhere to show off important mementoes or achievements and hang family photos. Hollywood actors famously boast how they display their prized Oscar's in the bathroom for all to see.

An illusion of space is very important as most cloakrooms are small in size. Cleverly placed mirrors can make areas appear larger than they actually are. It is vital to pick suitable wallpaper. Busy wallpaper can make a room feel claustrophobic but a simple, plain paper can reflect light and enhance such a tiny room.

Windows in a cloakroom are often quite small and not a regular size allowing made to measure curtains to be the ideal solution. Designed to fit any shape or sized window and they are available in an array of colours and designs.

However, it is the finishing touches that help to complete the illusion you are trying to create. A soft towel, scented soap and good quality loo paper could just make all the difference!]]>

<![CDATA[Declutter and Add Vibrant Colours]]>Most interior design starts with decluttering and this seems particularly appropriate and the start of a new year. Fabric, including curtains, throws and cushion covers can all help to create a chosen "look". Before you buy fabric have a good look at what's on offer, there's a vast choice out there.

Consider the rest of the decor in your room before making you selection - if your walls a plain you could decide on a multi coloured more vibrant fabric than you would if you already have a fancy wall paper.

<![CDATA[Update Your Home in 2010]]>At this time of year magazines are full of ideas of how to spruce up and update your home for the new year...and it's almost time for a spring cleaning overhaul too. So what can you do:

If you have plenty of money to throw at the problem you could employ a professional interior designer. But for most of us a few simple things can make a huge difference.

You could give your home a lick of paint. This is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to make a dramatic difference quickly.

Look around your home and think about repositioning items - moving something from the bedroom into the sitting room can make a big difference without you having to spend a penny. Similarly, moving furniture around within a room can give everything a new lease of life.

Think about accessories like lamps and rugs. For example adding a dimmer switch or changing a light shade can make all the difference softening harsh light. A lamp positioned in the corner can completely change the atmosphere of a room. A piece of art work hung strategically above the fireplace will add character and individualism.

Add a fresh, clean feel by investing in a pair of made to measure curtains. Doing away with dingy dark window dressings and adding a new set will open up a room and let light in when open and create a cosy atmosphere when drawn.

You don't have to spend a lot to give your home a complete make-over. So why not have a go and reguevinate your home in 2010.]]>

<![CDATA[Create a Comfortable Living Space with Colour]]>The colours, fabrics and textures that you use in a room will all determine the atmosphere in the room. You may decide to go for a minimalist look or a sumptuous decadent feel. For instance, if you incorporate a heavy, dark set of made to measure curtains you will immediately add warmth and formality to a room. A floating set of voiles will add a breezy, light, clean atmosphere.

Colour is one of the factors at play here, as well as the weight and texture of the fabric. Colour can influence whether a room looks, big, dark, light or full, and whether it feels relaxing and calm or romantic and sensual. Adding accessories like curtains, rugs, cushions, ornaments and paintings will add to the atmosphere of a room and help to create different moods.

In terms of colour, to add light to a room use colours like yellow, orange and light blue. These colours can be incorporated into the accessories like the curtains and do not necessarily need to be used on the walls. These colours will introduce light into a room even if the room has low level lighting.

Green and other natural colours help to create a feeling of calm. Blue also create a feeling of calm and tranquility. Purple and pink are associated with romance and can also be restful when used in a bedroom.]]>

Braid, a narrow trimming similar to ribbon, can also be used and is popular in upholstery and lampshades as well as on curtain pelmets.

The possibilities are almost endless and its important to do your research and carefully decide what "look" you are hoping to achieve before you place your order and buy curtains.]]>

Other ways to play with the light in a room is by adding lamps rather than harsh ceiling lights, or by incorporating glass objects into a room which will add sparkle and allow the light to bounce off them.]]>

<![CDATA[Measuring for a Bay Window]]>It can be quite daunting to measure for curtains for a bay window when choosing either made to measure curtains or ready made curtains. First, measure the entire window area, then take the dimensions of the individual sections of the bay. Accurate measurements are essential and its worth taking a little time to get things right at this stage.

As with measuring for an ordinary window you need to allow for enough material to be able to pull back your curtains away from the window letting in the light and to draw the curtains completely together to keep out the cold and dark.

Modern curtain tracks and poles are extremely practical. Those made from PVC are suitable for lighter weight curtains and can be bent around bay windows. Aluminum tracks are more suitable for heaver curtains and can also bend effectively around the angles of a bay window.]]>

<![CDATA[Curtains for Privacy]]>Most of us buy curtains for, as well as other things, the privacy they afford. It seems that privacy is not as important to some people though. For instance, recent reports have shown that guests at the Standard Hotel seem reluctant to even close their curtains!

The Standard Hotel, which towers over the new High Line Park in New York, has floor to ceiling windows and it would seem that guests have a habit of leaving the curtains wide open at times when they probably should not.

The hotel is now positively encouraging its guests to close the curtains after people flocked to the park to witness them in potentially compromising situations.]]>

<![CDATA[Measuring for a Standard Curtain Pole]]>Curtains poles are both practical and decorative. They can be used to radically improve the look of your window dressing.

Measuring for a standard curtain pole is not difficult.

If you already have a curtain pole and you are simply replacing one you can simply take the measurements of the existing curtain pole.

If you are starting afresh with and have never had a curtain pole before start by measuring the inside recess width of the window. Then you need to decide how much space you want to have on either side for the curtains to pull back. This should be at least 15cms on either side.
Remember that when you start shopping for your curtain pole you will also need to allow for the finials which go on the end of the pole.

Curtain poles can be used with both ready made curtains and made to measure curtains and in most window recesses. It is possible to use curtain poles even in bay windows although measuring is slightly more complicated.]]>

The curtains, which were donated by the general public, mean that the charity will not need to buy curtains for their projects.

<![CDATA[Close Curtains to Combat Crime]]>Recently the police in a London Borough have sent out a bulletin which encourages local residents to close their curtains. This advice has been given in a bid to discourage opportunist smash and grab burglars.

The same advice has recently been given in relation to net curtains. Whilst these are not considered to be a very fashionable addition to the home, statistics do suggest that people with net curtains are less likely to fall victim to burglars who spot items through uncurtained windows.

The number of burglaries is also thought to be on the rise and this is linked to the overall economic downturn. It’s therefore a good time to buy curtains and if they are already in place to close them at night.]]>

<![CDATA[Feng Shui and Curtains]]>Feng Shui is an ancient philosophy which originated in China. Its roots are in striving to live harmoniously with nature and literally translated it means wind water. It is based on the simple idea that are emotional wellbeing is deeply affected by our physical environment.

Chi is the energy which flows through a house and so the window openings and how they are dressed are important in Feng Shui.

In order to improve the Chi in your home you should open the curtains in daytime to let in light and positive energy.

Curtains should be closed at night as open curtains are thought to let in bad luck.

Curtains should be made of natural materials and curtain pools should ideally be wood, again natural products are more receptive to Chi and the flow of positive energy.

Adapt your curtains in line with the seasons, using heavey fabric in winder and lighter fabrics in summer. Choose colours that will work with the natural light of the season.

<![CDATA[Which Curtains for Which Room? (Part 1)]]>When you're thinking about buying curtains one of the first things to take into account is where they will be hung, in other words, which room in your home are they intended for. This applies whether you eventually decide on ready made curtains or made to measure curtains.

Living Room Curtains
As the main reception and entertaining room it is common for the curtains to be more formal and designed to make a bigger impression than those in other rooms in the home. People are often prepared to allocate a larger budget to living room curtains and to take their time to choose the curtains which will create the “right” impression to visitors and friends.

Bedroom Curtains
Curtains in bedrooms are often more feminine and prettier but at the same time need to be heavy enough to block out early morning sunshine. Blackout treatments or fabrics are frequently used.]]>

<![CDATA[Which Curtains for Which Room? (Part 2)]]>Kitchen curtains
Curtains which you intend to hang in a kitchen, whether they are ready made curtains or made to measure curtains, need to be practical and easy to clean. They are often simple in style for this reason. When you are planning your kitchen bear in mind that you will not want the curtains to hang over an area where they may easily get dirty. Kitchens are often designed so that whilst you are washing up you can look out over the garden – it may be wise to choose a moisture resistant fabric or blinds.

Bathroom Curtains
Similarly curtains for the bathroom need to be practical and easy to clean. Curtains in the bathroom should ideally be made of light, fine fabric so that if the get wet they dry off quickly. Again practicality is important consideration. There are a variety of moisture resistant fabrics available.]]>

<![CDATA[A Brief History of the Curtain]]>Curtains have been used for centuries. Originally they were utilised not only to keep out insects and dust but bad weather elements. Windows would have been adorned in animal hide or fur, not a fabric of choice for present day modern society.

As cultures developed curtains were seen as not only functional but evolved into an ornamental window treatment. Luxurious fabrics, such as velvet or the finest lace were used to adorn windows and they provided an air of elegance to the any room. Bed curtains also became popular not only for functional reasons but also to add a sense of mystique. For example , in the Orient, beaded curtains made from coloured glass were used and exquisite drapery such as gossamer adorned harems and throne rooms.

Nowadays curtains are still used for practical reasons but they are also seen as a focal point in a room or to frame a view or window. Whether you are choosing curtains for a kitchen or a bedroom the type that you decide on tend to reflect your personality and look you are trying to achieve.

There is a huge range of curtains available on the market. Whether it be tab-pleated, swag or smock, access to choices have been made more readily available with the introduction of the world wide web. Customers can choose from ready made curtains to made to measure curtains. They can see different headers, materials and designs.]]>

<![CDATA[Curtain Headings]]>When you are buying curtains, careful consideration should be given to which curtain headings you choose. Curtains can come in a wide variety of styles and can influence the design and feel of your home. The heading you choose will give your room individuality and create an atmosphere of formality or informality. These design distinctions can be made whether you are buying ready made curtains or made to measure curtains.

Standard Pleats.
By sewing header tape into the top edge of the curtain, many different headers and effects can be created. For instance pleats and folds can be formed by pulling the cord which runs through the tapes. Pleats can be made sharper when the cord is drawn tightly. There can be several cords in each tape for drawing up the pleats in the curtain and a good quality tape will also have several rows of pockets for hooks which will allow you to adjust the height of the heading.

Box Pleats.
This effect can be created using box pleat heading tape. The pleats have no spacing between them but fall one after the other. This gives a more formal and tailored look as the curtain falls into deep pleats down its full length.

Cased Headings.
Simple cased headings are used for net curtains or lightweight fabrics that are not being constantly opened or closed. The casing sewn across the top is left open at the ends. A narrow curtain rod or plastic covered spring slides through the channel and fits into hooks at the side of the window.

Eyelet/Slot headings.
These are used to create a simple modern look. A narrow rod, pole or wire is threaded through eyelets that are positioned close to the top edge creating deep folds.

Goblet/Cartledge Pleated Headings.
Goblet pleats are ideal for longer more elegant curtains. The pleats fall from each goblet and can be filled with tissue paper or cotton wool to help retain their shape.]]>

<![CDATA[Curtains for Windows of all Shapes and Sizes]]>If you live in either a bespoke modern house or an older property you’ll probably find that your windows are not of a modern standard size. This means that buying ready made curtains may cause problems and may even be out of the question for you.

The alternative is to opt for made to measure curtains. This will ensure the curtains have the necessary width and fall to provide the perfect finish for your window.

For example, if you live in a thatched cottage your windows are likely to be small and deeply set. It is unlikely that you will be able to buy ready made curtains which would fit this sort of window.

If you live in a modern house with very large glass paneled feature windows again finding an off the peg curtain is very likely to be impossible.]]>

<![CDATA[How to Clean and Maintain Your Curtains]]>We can help you to buy curtains (ready made curtains and made to measure curtains) but to get the most out of your new curtains you need to know how to clean and maintain them.

Always follow the care instructions given by the manufacturer. Before attempting to wash your curtains try the following:

Firstly, use a vacuum cleaner on low power with an upholstery cleaning brush. Curtains are more likely to have collected dust than actually got dirty. If they do have dirty marks try spot clean them with a light fabric cleaner.

If you are unable to achieve a satisfactory result by vacuuming and spot cleaning, the next step is to take your curtains to the dry cleaners. Alternatively, hand wash curtains to avoid shrinkage and hang them back up whilst they are still damp.]]>

<![CDATA[Ready Made or Made to Measure?]]>So how do you decide whether you should buy ready made curtains or made to measure curtains?

There are a number of variables to consider like; price, how quickly you need the curtains, heading styles, choice of fabrics and quality of the finished product.

On the whole, made to measure curtains will be more expensive this is obviously due to them being tailor made to your exact requirements. The delivery time on ready made curtains will probably be no more than a few days – you will have to wait longer whilst your made to measure curtains are made. You will probably have a far wider choice of heading styles and fabric if you opt for made to measure curtains. Your supplier is likely to have more control over the quality of made to measure curtains as well.

So your choice will depend largely on how quickly you want your curtains and whether you have a very particular finish in mind]]>

<![CDATA[Tips on Measuring for New Curtains]]>Whether you’re thinking of buying ready made curtains or made to measure curtains it’s really important that you get things right from the beginning.

The beginning is measuring up for your curtains and this is where it can all very easily go wrong.

The first thing to remember is to measure your track or pole NOT your window. If you haven’t chosen or bought your track yet it’s a really good idea to do this before you go any further.

Measuring the Width:
Remember that the curtain pole or track should extend on both sides of the window by approximately 15 to 20 cms. This is to allow you to push back the curtains away from the window during the day. If you fail to account for the additional width when ordering your curtains you may find that they are not wide enough to hang nicely when drawn or they may not meet in the middle when drawn.

Measuring the Length:
When you are measuring the length of the curtains, measure the drop in several different places. This is because floors or window sills, especially in old houses, are rarely completely even. Once you have taken several measurements order the curtains to the shortest measurement. By doing this you will avoid the curtains looking uneven at the bottom.]]>

<![CDATA[Which Curtain Fabric to Choose]]>Considering which fabric to use is important whether you are buying ready made curtains or made to measure curtains.

Silks are very popular for use in curtains and it’s difficult to find a curtain fabric which hangs better.

Medium weight material used in upholstery can also work well – lending a more substantial and heavier looking finish to your window dressing.

Cottons and linens are also popular choices but because they crease and wrinkle quite readily they are generally used where a less formal appearance is desired.]]>

<![CDATA[Which Curtains are Right for You?]]>Before you buy ready-made curtains or made-to-measure curtains for your home you need to consider several things:

1. Which room will the curtains be hanging in?
2. What is the style and feel you are trying to create within the space?
3. Are there any practical implications which need to be considered?
4. What’s your budget?

For instance, your living room is usually the main reception room in the house and the curtains you choose for this room will probably be formal and dramatic – designed to make an impact.

Whereas, bedroom curtains are likely to be prettier and more feminine but at the same time need to block out early morning sunshine and curtains in the bathroom may need to be made from moisture resistant fabric.

Once you decided on the general feel you are looking for and considered the practicalities, you are ready to think about fabrics, pattern, colour and the details of the design and headings of your curtains.

There are loads of different headings to consider. Some will create a more formal feel and some will be more relaxed. Some of the most popular ones are standard pleats, box pleats, cased headings, eyelets headings, pencil pleats and tab tops.
